Tía Berta’s Coconut Kisses

I love these not only because they were sweet and a little gooey but also because of their name. Since Tía was not welcome in Dulce’s kitchen, she had to wait until Dulce took her afternoon rest to rush in and make a commando raid in the shortest time possible. I was grateful for her kindness—a side of her tormented personality we didn’t see very often. She wasn’t much of cook either, but these besitos required very little skill and just three ingredients—that much she could handle. I used to nibble on them slowly while doing my homework, and it made studying much easier.

1 package (7 ounces) grated sweetened coconut flakes

½ cup condensed milk

1 egg, well beaten

Chocolate syrup for garnish (optional)

Preheat oven to 300ºF. Combine the coconut, condensed milk, and egg in a bowl. Mix well.
